How to Avoid Shingles?

Imagine waking up one morning with a painful, burning sensation on your skin — tingling that quickly turns into a blistering rash that just won’t go away. This is shingles, a condition most people never forget. And while it usually clears up in a few weeks, for some, the pain can linger for months or even years.

Here in Ireland, shingles — medically known as herpes zoster — is caused by the same virus that gives us chickenpox. If you’ve had chickenpox in the past (and most adults have), that virus lurks in your nerves, waiting for the right moment to reawaken later in life.

Thankfully, there’s a highly effective shingles vaccine you can get to protect yourself before that happens.

What Is the Shingles Vaccine?

The most widely used vaccine in Ireland is called Shingrix — a recombinant vaccine designed to reduce your chances of developing shingles and a serious complication called post-herpetic neuralgia (persistent nerve pain after the rash heals). Shingrix is given as two doses, usually two months apart, and provides very strong protection: studies show up to 97% effectiveness in adults aged 50–69, and over 90% in older age groups.

This vaccine doesn’t stop chickenpox — it stops the reawakening of the virus that leads to shingles.

Who Should Get Vaccinated?

While shingles can technically happen at any age, the risk increases significantly as we get older. Most clinics and pharmacies in Ireland recommend the shingles vaccination to:

  • Adults aged 50 years and over, and

  • Adults 18 years and older who have a weakened immune system (due to medical conditions or treatments).

Even if you’ve had shingles before, you can still choose to get vaccinated — the immune boost can help prevent a second episode. Experts typically recommend waiting about a year after your shingles episode before getting vaccinated.

Cost and Availability in Ireland

A unique aspect of shingles vaccination in Ireland is that it is currently not part of the free national immunisation programme — meaning the HSE does not routinely provide it at no cost, and people must pay privately for the service.

At many pharmacies, including ours, the two-dose Shingrix vaccination service typically costs in the range of €480–€490 in total (around €240 per dose). Prices can vary slightly between providers.

There is ongoing discussion in Ireland about whether the shingles vaccine should be added to the State immunisation schedule — especially for older people — and advocacy groups have called for free access for people aged 65+ to make preventative care more equitable.

How the Vaccine Helps You

Getting your shingles vaccination in Ireland means:

  • A lower chance of developing shingles

  • Less severe symptoms if you do get it

  • Protection against post-herpetic neuralgia, one of the most debilitating complications

  • Peace of mind as you age and your immune system naturally changes

You can walk into many pharmacies all year round, speak to your pharmacist, and book your shingles vaccine appointment — no need for a GP referral in most cases.

Safety Notes

Like all vaccines, Shingrix can produce mild short-term reactions — such as soreness at the injection site, fatigue or muscle aches — but serious side effects are rare. Your pharmacist can talk you through what to expect and how to manage any temporary discomfort.

There are some situations when shingles vaccination might not be recommended, such as during pregnancy or if you have certain immune conditions, so always have a chat with your pharmacist to see what’s right for you.

Shingles isn’t something most of us think about — until it happens. But a simple visit to your pharmacy can give you the protection you need to reduce that risk, keep pain at bay, and enjoy life with one less thing to worry about.
